Laura McGarrigle

Surgery Champion

Hi everyone,

I'm Laura, and I’m excited to be stepping into the role of ACPRC Surgical Champion. I’ve specialized in cardiothoracic transplantation since 2009, where I lead a small rehab team focused on heart and lung transplantation, as well as mechanical circulatory support. I’m passionate about critical care rehab as well as all things respiratory! Ultimately, what drives me the most is patient care and teamwork. I find great satisfaction in being part of a patient’s journey and improving their quality of life. This passion motivates me to continue growing, both professionally and personally, through practice development, research, and networking with other members of the physiotherapy community.

I’ve been part of the NHS for 21 years and completed my MSc in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy in 2015. Recently, I enjoyed the challenge of an NIHR predoctoral fellowship, where I researched frailty in lung transplant candidates—something I’m very passionate about. I’m a strong advocate for research, evidence-based practice, and providing holistic care to our patients. I’m about to start an exciting project with NHS Blood and Transplant, where we’re developing an enhanced recovery program for lung transplantation.

I’ve been a member for most of my career and over the years, I’ve gained so much from the ACPRC’s educational resources—whether it’s through courses, conferences, or the invaluable networking opportunities—and I’m eager to give back and help others in the same way. I’m looking forward to collaborating with the ACPRC surgical networks, learning more about their work, and getting to know everyone involved. I’m also really excited to work alongside and learn from the ACPRC committee.

Outside of work, I’m a huge netball fan and follow Manchester Thunder. I coach my son’s under-8 tag rugby team and try to keep fit myself.
